His development falls into two distinct periods. Before he went to Jamaica his work was highly figurative, based on the human figure and painted in bold, clear colours. After Jamaica it became more abstract. There he also took up drawing again, particularly in Siberian chalk. In addition, he mastered various graphic techniques. Jamaica made him more aware of his cultural roots: the Arawak Indians.
