New School of Art 1970-1976
Edna Manley Visual School of Arts, Jamaica, 1986-1988
Worked at the Nola Hatterman Institute from its inception; teacher at the Pencil and Brush at the beginning of his career, under the influence of Nola Hatterman, Klas was painting Surinam scenes in a naturalist style. After studying in Jamaica he experimented with form and colour, and although the figurative element did not disappear, it was transposed into a Cubist-like interplay of lines, exemplified by his extensive series ‘Erf Dwellings’. More recently he has taken up new themes, such as the tropical rainforest and inland cultures. Alongside paintings, he also makes monoprints and sculptures.
