Getrouw is an admirer of Impressionism and Cubism. After experimenting with abstraction in the sixties, he developed his own vividlycoloured style based on the tension created between the spatial illusion and the flat surface of the canvas. A Cézanne-esque spatial approach and the collage principle also played a role. The nude, the still life and the cityscape form his main themes.
